Orton-Gillingham Tutor Training Course

The Orton-Gillingham Basic Tutor Training Course will train individuals in the Orton-Gillingham Approach for the remediation of individuals with Specific Language/Learning Difference - Dyslexia. These persons can succeed when those responsible for their success:

  • understand language; its processing; production and structure
  • understand the nature of a specific language difference and its ramifications
  • and understand the way dyslexics learn. 

This approach can be used effectively in general education, special education, learning resource, tutoring, and home-school programs by educators, tutors, and parents who are extensively trained in the approach.

Course Content

  • The Orton-Gillingham Approach - overview, rationale, philosophy, teaching strategies
  • Specific Language/Learning Differences (Dyslexia) - the student and their difficulties with language
  • Scope, Sequence and Structure of all language Skills - Phonology; Phonological Awareness; Reading (decoding, blending, identifying and correcting errors, comprehension); Spelling (Orton-Gillingham technique, identifying and correcting errors, Orton-Gillingham techniques for non-phonetic words); Penmanship; Alphabet; Dictionary; Basic Composition; Syllabication (6 kinds of syllables, 5 divisions, Orton-Gillingham teaching techniques; Morphology
  • Lesson Planning - Teaching a "Total Language Hour"
  • Supervised practicum - a diagnostic lesson and 7 to 9 sequential lessons
  • Over 90 classroom hours
  • Creation of Multisensory Teaching Aids

Format

Thirteen to fifteen sessions of intensive training in a multisensory phonetic approach to remediating reading, writing and spelling difficulties. The classroom hours will include lectures, demonstrations, practise of skills learned, lesson planning, making tutoring aids, completion of assignments, related videos, tests, and a supervised practicum. Regular home assignments are given. Approximately 20 hours of pre-course preparation is required after registration.
Certificate of attendance and completion will be issued when course criteria have been met. Completion of this course will allow participants to become eligible for membership with the Canadian Academy of Therapeutic Tutors (Orton-Gillingham).

Lois Lindsay: B.C. Teacher; Fellow, Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators; Director and Fellow of The Canadian Academy of Therapeutic Tutors; Private Therapeutic Tutor; Orton-Gillingham training from The Reading Centre, Rochester, MN. 28 years of work experience in this specialized field; Recipient of the Kline Award for Outstanding Service in the Field of Dyslexia.

Corey Zylstra: Practicing O-G Tutor, Supervisor and Trainer, has served on the Board of Directors for International Dyslexia Association, BC Branch and was a co-founder of North Shore Society for SLD Children. She has co-authored Step Into Phonics and has over 13 years of experience in the field of Special Education.

All certified and accredited Orton-Gillingham Courses in British Columbia are offered through the Surrey College and are co-sponsored by The Canadian Academy of Therapeutic Tutors and Surrey College. Full semester courses begin in September or January; intensive Summer courses are in July.
Courses are held at Surrey Conference Center, 9260 140th Street, Surrey.

Course applicants will be required to submit a criminal record search prior to beginning the practicum component of the course. Course applications should be sent to Surrey College. Applications will be considered on a first come basis after a successful interview with a representative from the academy. However, application and payment does not guarantee acceptance into the course. You will be notified of acceptance.
